Donnie Darko

This movie... It's perfect in many ways, and it hit me so hard and so deep that I just wanted to create an entry about it, and share some of its jewells with whomever happens to read this...
I found this movie searching for a quote in the song "Dying Alone Done", by Happy Days.

It was one of the best movies I've ever seen... It's a movie about change. And love, sacrifice and the road not taken. But it's so much more... It's life told from a sci-fi point of view. It's about facing what we truly are. About being surrounded by lies and stupidity, and finding the strength to say "FUCK YOU!".

Donnie: Why are you wearing that stupid bunny suit?
Frank: Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Dr. Lilian Thurman: Donnie, what did Roberta Sparrow say to you?
Donnie: She said that every living creature on Earth dies alone.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: Do you feel alone right now?
Donnie: Oh, I don't know. I mean, I'd like to believe I'm not, but I just... I've just never seen any proof, so I... I just don't debate it anymore, you know? It's like I could spend my whole life debating it over and over again, weighing the pros and cons. And in the end, I still wouldn't have any proof. So I just... I just don't debate it anymore. It's absurd.
Dr. Lilian Thurman: The search for God is absurd?
Donnie: It is if everyone dies alone.
Dr. Lilian Thurman: Does that scare you?
Donnie: I don't want to be alone.

Gretchen: You're weird.
Donnie: Sorry.
Gretchen: No, that was a compliment actually.

Gretchen: And what if you could go back in time and take all those hours of pain and darkness and replace them with something better?

Gretchen: "Donnie Darko." What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something.
Donnie: What makes you think I'm not?

Donnie: [reading poem in class] "'A storm is coming,' Frank says. 'A storm that will swallow the children. And I will deliver them from the kingdom of Bane. I'll deliver the children back to their doorsteps. I'll send the monsters back to the underground. I'll send them back to a place where no one else can see them except for me, 'cause I am Donnie Darko.'"

Donnie: [in a letter] Dear Roberta Sparrow, I have reached the end of your book and there are so many things that I need to ask you. Sometimes I'm afraid of what you might tell me. Sometimes I'm afraid that you'll tell me that this is not a work of fiction. I can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: Donnie. An atheist is someone who denies altogether the existence of God. You're an agnostic. An agnostic is someone who believes that there can be no proof of the existence of God, but does not deny a possibility that God exists.

Donnie: Well, life isn't that simple. I mean, who cares if Ling Ling returns the wallet and keeps the money? It has nothing to do with either fear or love.
Kitty Farmer: Fear and love are the deepest of human emotions.
Donnie: Okay. But you're not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here, like the whole spectrum of human emotion. You can't just lump everything into these two categories and then just deny everything else.

Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: And did you stop and think that maybe infants need darkness? That maybe darkness is part of their natural environment?

Karen Pommeroy: The children have to save themselves these days because the parents have no clue.

Karen Pommeroy: [to Principal Cole] I don't think that you have a clue what it's like to communicate with these kids. And we are losing them to apathy, to this prescribed nonsense. They are slipping away.

Human perfection

Have you ever thought about perfection? Do you see it as a concept? Do you think it's an achievable goal or status? Do you believe humans labeled as 'imperfect beings' could ever reach perfection? I do. In fact, I think every human can be perfect in a way. Of course, not in the sense of never making mistakes or being physically flawless, but in the sense of seeing their existence as a perfect work of art. This is happening to me for the first time, being involved in a deeply intimate relationship with this 'perfect person' in which we trust each other so much that we're no longer afraid to open up and show our ugliest sides or confess our most hidden secrets, knowing that we will understand them and accept us for who we are, and who we were before meeting each other.
I must confess I thought many times in the past few months that she had made several 'mistakes', or that she should have said or done something differently. I even thought I was being treated unfairly. But now I look back and understand everything. I understand why she said 'those things' or acted 'that way'. I can see the whole picture, the whole path that led her to love me so much right now. She had to have doubts and think about a lot of stuff in order to be so sure of wanting to be with me right now, and I needed to go through a lot of 'trials' to show her and myself that I was up to what my words promised, that I was ready to face anything that she and life threw at me in order to make her happy. It is this 'whole picture', this understanding of her that allows me to say that she is perfect. I can see no flaw in what she did, for right now everything is just amazing.
I made mistakes as well. I even said some things that are really hard to swallow, about me, my past, my personality and my mental disorders. And she knows I'm a wreck inside. She knows I can break down anytime I'm alone and spend the whole night with drops of tears and blood staining my skin. And that is never easy... I'm really proud of her strength of will and patience to be there for me when I feel weak and insecure and afraid and I need her, because only she can help me. I know I'm not easy to love for many, many reasons, but she's still there for my, wanting to be my girl forever. I just can't explain with words how that makes me feel, how it makes me love her.
So... yeah, that's what I meant by perfection. Understanding someone completely and loving them and the whole path that led them to became what they are is the first step to see them as 'perfect'. The second one is loving what they mean to you. The third one is letting them save you and heal you. And then you will realize you're no longer walking alone. You will never walk alone again through this life.

Thank you, for being who you are. And thank you, for being in my life forever. You will always be perfect to me.
